The Catholic Community at Johns Hopkins

History

This is a list of activities that the Johns Hopkins Catholic Community has participated in.  The list is far from complete so please contact Dan Schlattman (danschlattman 'at' gmail 'dot' com) if you have more information, or just other ideas for this page. The list will not contain regularly scheduled events such as mass, bible study, and newman night (though some Newman activities of note will be mentioned).

11/01/2009: Day of the Dead celebration
Celebration of the 'Day of the Dead' (Dia De Los Muertos).  Josie provided a great background to the history of this Mexican tradition, as well as cooked some amazing food for the feast.

10/31/2009: Little Sisters of the Poor - Celebrate a Saint Party
Joined the Sisters and the elderly residents they take care of for a party! The fun begins with a: Get-together with the residents 3pm, followed by Evening prayer at 5pm Dinner with the residents (we serve them!) at 6pm, and an All Saints Vigil for the newly canonized Saints at 7pm! We will be meeting outside the library at 2:20pm, and leaving by 2:30pm. We should return by 9pm.

10/30/2009: Marian House Halloween Party!

10/26/2009 - 10/30/2009: Busy Person's Retreat
Kate Flores hosted these mini-retreats for those busy with studies. The first 15-20 min were a talk on Faith Hope and Love and then followed by a discussion. Those that could only stay for part of the retreat could leave when they had to (That's why it's called what it's called!)

10/23/2009: Movie Night
Watched 'The Princess Bride'

10/22/2009: Banana Surgery Activity for Newman Night
An activity to help us all keep in mind our connection with God and our friends/family.  Each person was given a banana and asked to cut it into 8 pieces.  Once cut up each person was asked to re-assemble their bananas.  The goal was to show how easy it is to break something apart, and how difficult it is to get it back to its original state.  The exercise was a symbolic reference to our relationship with God and how only Jesus's sacrifice can truly make us one with God again. Check the photos page for some great pics of the reconstructed bananas.

10/09/2009 - 10/10/2009: Canonization of Jeanne Jugan
We celebrated the canonization of Jeanne Jugan with the Little Sisters of the poor.  Canonization is basically becoming a saint.  After we had the little sisters of the poor come to our Newman night earlier in the week, we were all invited to their hospital and retirement center in Catonsville.  Jeanne Jugan is their patroness and foundress.  The sisters were extremely proud and it was an emotional time.

10/01/2009: Little Sisters of the poor come to Newman Night
Two sisters from the Little Sisters of the Poor came to talk to the students and pray with the students at this Newman Night.  It was a great time and a lot of great conversations were had.

09/25/2009: Movie Night
We watched Jurassic Park and had a great discussion on the boundaries of science in our society and whether they should be set or not.

9/19/2009: Day at the Beach for the men of Carrington House
For the second year in a row, the Johns Hopkins Catholic Community organized a Day at the Beach for the men of Carrington House to kick off our community service program. The day trip was from 9am-3:30pm Saturday September 19th. It was a little too cold to swim, but we had fun playing on the beach and collecting shells. We also tried digging holes in the sand and make castles! The guys cooked up some delicious BBQ hot dogs and burgers (forgot the cooking utensils again!). We played football, frisbee, and even cards on this beautiful and fair-weathered early autumn day.
