Directions for Using Slirp on hops.cs.jhu.edu
You are required to have either a SLIP or PPP client in order
to use Slirp. These instructions assume you have either a SLIP or PPP
client and know how to use it. You are also required to have an account
on hops.cs.jhu.edu.
What is Slirp?
Slirp is a user application which allows you to establish either a SLIP or
PPP style connection without the need for a dedicated IP address. It
allows you to use certain types of TCP/IP applications as if you had a
true SLIP or PPP connection. Slirp, however, is NOT a true SLIP or PPP
connection, and as a result, has some limitations. For more info on slirp

Important Info Before Attempting to Use Slirp
Your SLIP or PPP software requires some or all of the following
information to function properly. If this information is not properly
entered, slirp may not work properly.
Host IP address (IP address of hops): 128.220.13.2
DNS (Domain Name Service) Host (choose one): 128.220.13.2, 128.220.13.50,
128.220.13.86
Your IP address: 10.0.2.15
MTU: 1500
MRU: 1500
NOTE: If, for any reason, you need to exit slirp, type 5 zeros and you
should get your command prompt back.
Distributions for use by department individuals
These distributions have information on using the programs included and
are designed to be used through the HAC modems and on hops.
To use slirp with SLIP or CSLIP:
To connect:
- Determine your modem connection speed
- Using your SLIP software, dial in to HACs modems at 516-5350
- Use rlogin or telnet to connect to hops by typing either of the
following:
- Enter your username and password
- At your command prompt, type: slirp
- Complete any requirements for your SLIP software to complete the
connection
To use slirp with PPP:
To connect:
- Determine your modem connection speed
- Using your PPP software, dial in to HACs modems at 516-5350
- Use rlogin or telnet to connect to hops by typing either of the
following:
- Enter your username and password
- At your command prompt, type: slirp -P
NOTE: It must be a capital P in the above command. The program is
case-sensitive.
